Game of Thrones Minecraft Mod Wiki
Machine translation via DeepL

The Game of Thrones mod wasn't developed in a single day - over the years, a huge number of builds have been released, each one making the mod better and of higher quality. Some updates were big and added a lot of new content; others were small, focused on detail, improvements, rework, and bugfixes. The following outlines the history of the mod's development and provides links to surviving builds. A full detailed list of changes can be read here.

Remember that it is best to play on the newest version. It is the most stable and has many advantages over older versions. Moreover, worlds from very old versions are incompatible with new ones.

Alpha-builds[]

Version 3

This is the name given to all builds released in 2019. Their notable feature is that not a single new line of code was created there. Yes, yes, that's right: it's just a repainted and renamed Lord of the Rings. Because of this, there was quite a bit of weird content in the world: extra continents, obscure factions, strange relationships between nations, and pseudo-factions throughout the continent. The player spun up in the ocean and couldn't earn reputation. All in all, it was unplayable.

Toward the end of the alpha stage, a new “medieval” GUI for the game was being developed - GUI 2.0. However, for technical reasons it was frozen until the Build 20.09.25 release.

What is interesting is that in the current version of the game, only five pieces of content remain from the entire alpha content:

  • Rocks (andesite, diorite, granite, rhyolite, basalt).
  • Trees (black-oak, red-oak, catalpa).
  • New animated wildfire texture.
  • New white walker sounds (ice crackling).
  • Texture of giants.

Not all alpha builds have survived. You can download the “surviving” updates here (Minecraft 1.7.10).

Beta-builds[]

Version 11

This is the name given to builds released in the first half of 2020. These are very unstable versions with a huge number of bugs, including crashes. But these updates already contain code changes in the game. The mod was approaching the current form in broad strokes and broke all records - dozens of updates in six months, dozens of factions in a week and so on. The mod finally became playable and got rid of weird content. The journey was huge: towards the end of the beta stage the mod was already quite similar to what we have now, while at the beginning it had nothing in common with the current version (or rather, five pieces of content that were made in the alpha).

Here's a partial list of the most basic innovations:

  • Cut out everything non-canonical.
  • All the roads of the world are laid out, which were later edited not very globally.
  • All waypoints of the world are mapped. Subsequently added only a couple dozen.
  • Added all currently existing factions with mobs and structures. It was done quickly, shambolic and raw, later improved and finalized many times.
  • Added the first characters: Grigor Clegane, Petyr Baelish, Daenerys Targaryen, Archmage Asshaya, and others.
  • The first fixed structures were added: Clegane's castle, Baelish's brothel. Both were removed in later updates.
  • Made the mechanics of Viht and Valyrian Steel, as well as the Sothorian Virus as they are now
  • Westeros and Essos armor sets were added. Some were later redrawn.
  • Created several dozen legendary items in their current form.
  • A hundred banners were drawn. Some of them were later redrawn.
  • All workbenches and krafts were made. Some of the crafting was later moved to a regular workbench.
  • Unlocked shields and fraternities. Later the shield gui was reworked to work for capes as well.
  • Hummel009 mob was added. He is still roaming the world, find him!
  • Conquests and invasions for all factions were spelled out. Subsequently adjusted.
  • Everything translated into Chinese - the third full translation.
  • Animals and hostile NPCs added: werewolves, elephants, mammoths, manticores. Exist in unchanged form until now.
  • Added shadow spellcasters.

You can download any surviving beta build here: here (Minecraft 1.7.10).

Builds 2020[]

Version 14

The boundary between full versions and beta versions is accepted to be held through July 1, 2020. This is exactly half a year, and also the start of the mod on a full-fledged source, after which it ceased to be a knock-off based on the Lord of the Rings mod. The changes since then have been profound and comprehensive, mod stability has increased, and vestiges of old content have been permanently removed.

Here is a partial list of the most basic innovations:

  • The ability to ride elephants and mammoths has been coded.
  • Created a portal to Game of Thrones (throw a sword into the lava)
  • Added a Wall: both an ice wall in the North and a wooden one in Ibben.
  • Chard trees added.
  • Added hundreds of achievements.
  • Hundreds of banners added.
  • Added hundreds of anchored structures (castles, fortresses) at each location.
  • Added dozens of books.
  • Added dozens of waypoints to the map.
  • Added many legendary characters.
  • Added legendary items.
  • New biomes added.
  • Added cloaks.
  • Added carnotite (as it turned out later, uranium ore. A very unfortunate choice for a building block).
  • New workbenches and crafting items added.
  • New animals added: red scorpions and walruses, woolly rhinos and others.
  • Added new content to existing factions: bombardier of Yi Ti, blacksmith of Tennes, alchemist of Asshai, rod of Asshai, and others.
  • Added all current titles.
  • Added new blocks: hatches made of different kinds of wood, paving stones, masonry, cement and concrete, quicksand, and others.
  • Added different drinks: brandy, sambuca, whiskey, alcohol
  • Added Summer Isles and Ibben with their structures, mobs, items and blocks.
  • Added unit pumping.
  • Added music packs.
  • Added compatibility with Lord of the Rings mod (this will run, but you better not put them both, it's definitely a bad idea).
  • Created the first prototype of the GOT API, then called “GOT Commander”. Simply put - a toolkit for programmers to make it easier to create addons for the mod.

Builds 2021[]

Version 17

The 2021 builds began to come out less frequently. Unlike the 2020 builds, the 2021 builds were focused on detailing and improving existing content that was being laid down at a rapid pace and in huge volume in 2020. Yet, the innovations there were also:

  • Changing seasons added.
  • A huge number of characters were added.
  • Introduced alloy steel and things made of it
  • New sets of armor and weapons were created.
  • Translated into many languages.
  • Built the Great Itian Wall and other content for Yi Ti.
  • New biomes have been mapped.
  • Added in-game language selection menu for mob replicas, books, quests and names.
  • Coded integration with NEI - now you can recognize item and block crafts and their uses.
  • Added a menu toggle in the workbench. Now you can choose whether to load the faction crafting list or the normal one.
  • Introduced a feature in the configuration that disables fixed structures and characters. Everything for servers!
  • Added wedding mechanics, also now structures are now populated by families instead of mob sets.
  • Coded compatibility with Weather 2.
  • Added labradorite and blocks made of it. Carnotite (uranium) has been removed.
  • Added gates in the Walls. Now you can easily get to and from the wildlings.
  • Written descriptions for weapons that can be used to kill walkers and wychs.
  • Redesigned Lhazar (from the ground up). Basically a completely different faction now.
  • New banners added.
  • Changed the money system. You can't craft money, but you can sell precious metals to jewelers at fixed prices.
  • Introduced new weather types: sand storm, etc.
  • Added engraving and painting of item names.
  • Added priests with phrases of Father Gregory from Half-Life 2.
  • Added thieves with quests from GTA IV.
  • Improved all structures on waypoints.
  • Added jewelers.
  • Traveling from point to point now depends on the distance between them. More to come!

Builds 2022[]

2022-09-12 18.59.30

This year's updates started to focus more on the “under the hood” stuff - how exactly the content is implemented. Lots of code improvements that are invisible to the eye - there's no point in listing them in an article. There was a huge focus on updates to existing content and detailing. There was new content too, but not in such a large amount:

  • The entire Ulthos was redone from scratch. New biomes, mobs, achievements, continent outlines.
  • New “ice” mobs - storms, or snow ifrites. A past attempt to add them took place in 2022 and failed.
  • Hummel009 has been moved to another location.
  • Redesigned all of Sotorios, but not globally - still recognizable.
  • Improved almost every banner in the game.
  • Written dozens of new books inspired by entries from Elder Scrolls.
  • Redrawn the entire far east of the world and improved biome colors.
  • Big update of all textures.
  • Recoded the system of fixing structures on points. It saved 28 technical biomes and allowed to look more diverse: now the structure clears a place for itself, say, in the middle of the forest.
  • All biomes and structures of free cities have been remade. Now closer to the canon.
  • Completely rewritten all matchbanks. Optimization and unification.
  • Added quests to kill mobs and players.
  • Coded GOT API - a toolkit for developers of addons to the “Game of Thrones” module.
  • Added Reptiloids (shrikes. All canonical).
  • Added negro variants of bums, thieves and assassins.
  • Created female variants for all titles. Statistically, between 1% and 3% of our audience are girls.
  • Added mountain castles.
  • Added full translations in Ukrainian, Turkish and Polish.
  • Added many achievements.
  • Added new villages to many factions.
  • Added new structures to waypoints. Now generally every point has a structure.
  • Added random ruins in biomes. Explore the world more interesting!
  • Added new biomes - Lorath's Maze, coastal ocean variants and others.
  • Added description of silver items with information about werewolves.

Builds 2023[]

The mod is more alive than ever! The fourth year of development has brought some optimization to the mod: a developer who went to university finds a use for his knowledge and hones his skills on the Game of Thrones mod.

  • Reworked the mechanics of seasons to be 8 times faster and 8 times more stable.
  • Updated the sounds of some mobs.
  • Added new biomes.
  • Added new food types: elephant meat and walrus fat.
  • Added new armor sets (ringlets made of other materials).
  • Updated translations into other languages. Files are structured and synchronized.
  • Armor durability has been increased by players' requests.
  • Improved militia garb.
  • Now there are no extinct trees. Everything can be found in the world.
  • The “Database Generator” tool has been finally implemented. It is suitable for generating websites. This site, or rather 1200 articles from it, were generated by the mod itself.
  • Improved some biomes and settlements.
  • Improved content of chests.
  • Fixed bugs in translations and world map.
  • Fixed logic bugs, such as the inability to visit the pyramid of Giskar.
  • Fixed broken mechanics such as displaying cloaks on the server and cement hardening.
  • Fixed “typos” that caused some merchants to sell the wrong things, some warlords to sell the wrong ones, some warriors to fight the wrong ones, and so on.

Builds 2024[]

The mod is still alive and updated, and is also getting a fundamental update that has been in preparation for exactly one year.

  • The mod has been completely rewritten to conform to Java conventions. Now all the code is beautiful and as optimized as possible.
  • In the process of rewriting the code, a huge amount of tails and dead ends from non-existent content was cut out. The mod has become lighter.
  • Creative inventory was rewritten, it got a new order of all things there.
  • Dragons now have the “Dracarys” feature - if you look somewhere in flight and press a key, the dragon will deliver a flaming blow there, equal in power to the most powerful fire bomb.
  • Dozens of new metal blocks and items with the latest textures have been added. Now there are full sets of weapons and armor from all important metals, though yourself a golden crossbow and copper sword. In return, old items of essos, westeros, leetnians, and ashaya were removed. Now there are more items and they are available to all factions.
  • All merchants and what they sell have been redesigned. Unification and order!
  • Valyrian region redrawn, biomes redesigned.
  • All world biomes have been generally rewritten and optimized.
  • Ocean water colors have been improved.
  • Drag-metals and gems now have fixed prices.
  • All translations in all languages have been improved. Assets have been further translated and expanded, mob dialogs are now livelier, more varied.
  • NEI now supports crafting in more functional blocks - for example, in the gurnova.
  • Added “Empty Game of Thrones” world type without structures and mobs - especially for servers.
  • Hundreds of new Achievements added, some old ones removed.
  • Rebalanced armor sets and warriors of different factions. Added new warriors to different factions.
  • Now all items and blocks in the game can be mined in survival.
  • Added beavers.
  • Added descriptions-guides to complex items like chisel.
  • Added new skins for mobs.
  • Improved drops of all mobs.
  • Improved burans and their artificial intelligence.
  • Improved fixed structures system - quality and optimization, also Euron doesn't sink under the ship.
  • Balanced unit prices.
  • Balanced kill bonuses.
  • Balanced warhorn prices.
  • Improved conquests in all biomes.
  • Concrete, cement, dragons and giants code rewritten and optimized.
  • All mobs have been rewritten from scratch, they now have an overall refined AI and are free of many individual bugs. In general, each mob requires less code and husks by default, you have to specify the actual features there.
  • Zero coordinates shifted to Winterfell.
  • 24 bugs fixed.
